Jacques Trumphemus’s Pot de Fleurs et citrons sur table violette

You need not hang your head in shame because you have never heard of this artist: Jacques Truphémus.

I have not, not until I went to, or rather returned to the Caillebotte Property in the town of Yerres, 23 kms (14 miles) south-east of Paris.

The Caillebotte Property, once the family home of the late French artist Gustave Caillebotte (I really do not like that word ‘late’ before Gustave Caillebotte’s name because for me an artist never dies) comprises several mansions now museums where art exhibitions are held from April to end of October, and a park through which a river runs.

This beautiful property is a favourite of mine, and several times each spring, summer and autumn I take the RER D1 train to the town of Yerres to spend some hours walking around the park – and of course to see the latest exhibitions in the museums.

I wrote about the Caillebotte Property here and here

I cannot recommend highly enough for you to get on to an RER D1 train and to be off to the Caillebotte Property. You won’t regret it: in fact, you will be spending a most pleasant few hours. And – you will be able to walk around the town of Yerres too: it’s quiet and pleasant, and far from the madding crowd that is Paris.

But to get back to Jacques Truphémus.

Currently, and until July 9 this year (2017) one of the property’s museums, the Ferme Ornée, is hosting an exhibition of his paintings.

The fee for the exhibition is only € 5, and believe me, compared to the € 12+ the Paris museums charge these days, this is not expensive. (Entry to the park is free.)

Jacques Truphémus is 94 years old – no, young – having been born in the French town of Grenoble on October 25, 1922, and he still paints, his talent not having deserted him.

You can read about him here and it is all that I could find on him in English.

What I will tell you about him briefly is that during WW2 he lived in the French city of Lyon, moved to Paris after the war (1947) where he worked as a night watchman in order not to starve and after two years returned to Lyon where he still lives today.  It was in Lyon in 1950 where his paintings were exhibit for the first time, and since then many galleries have housed Truphémus exhibitions.

Below you can see a few of his paintings, and I hope you agree with me that he is a wonderful artist. And that Paris’s Louvre should buy/exhibit some of his paintings.

The Caillebotte Property is at No. 8 rue de Concy in Yerres, and the La Ferme Ornee Museum is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm with a lunch closure from noon to 2 pm, and on weekends and national holidays from 10 am to 6 pm.
