Do you ever listen to the radio? Or, do you think listening to the radio is old hat, something your old Gran and Granddad do?

Well, listening tothe radio is still  something done here in France. And not just on the iPhone or the tablet, but indeed on a radio set!

Here are the 6 most popular French radio stations. (Statistics up to 2nd  quarter this year of 2017).

#1 RTL.  6,485,000 listeners daily. Increased by 1.6% from last year 2016, but down by 0.8% from 2nd quarter of 2017.

#2 FRANCE INTER. 5,999,000 listeners daily. Down by 1.1% from last year 2016, and steady from 2nd quarter of 2017.

#3 NRJ. 5,783,000 listeners daily. Down by 0.2% from last year 2016, but up by 1.9% from 2nd quarter of 2017

#4  FRANCE INFO. 4,594,000 listeners daily. Up by 8.4% from last year 2016, but down  by 4.5% from 2nd quarter of 2017.

#5 RMC. 4,216,000 listeners daily. Up by 0.7% from last year 2016, and up by 1.3% from 2nd quarter of 2017,

#6 EUROPE 1. 3,891,000 listeners daily. Down by 10.5% from last year 2016, but upby 1.4% from 2nd quarter of 2017.

Biggest loser was EUROPE 1. I can tell you why. It  is too noisy: people joking, people laughing. Time someone tells them this, and I have now done so.

I listen to FRANCE INFO. It is best for news, and for Breaking News.

Here is my radio. If you are again thinking ‘old hat’, I will tell you that I’ve had it now for something like 25 years andit works perfectly well.

Good to see you blogging again Marilyn – I’ve missed you!

I almost never listen to the radio. In fact I find background noise extremely annoying, particularly when I’m working. However, your post has reminded me that it’s not only the best way to keep up with what is happening in the world, but also maintaining and improving one’s French.

I think all the stations you mention are available on line via the computer, so I intend to listen to one for 15 minutes every day. Thanks for a most useful post.

    Very best wishes

    Susie

Frances, James and I too had a radio in every room in the flat, but this was so that James always had the news ‘at his finger tips’ and need not walk around the flat looking for the radio.

Delightful. My Mum had a radio in each room of the house, sometimes three going at the same time, so that she could move around and not miss a word of what she was listening to….
