You are sitting down in a Paris restaurant, and you are hungrily waiting for your order to be served.  You have ordered Blanquet de Veau – a delicately-flavoured veal stew.

And here comes the waiter, and when he puts the plate of food down on the table in front of you, you nearly faint.

It is a large plate and you know, just know, that you will never be able to eat all that food.

So, what to do?

You hate leaving food; especially if it had cost you quite a bit – and as we know Paris restaurants are expensive. And leaving food, is wasting food, because, apparently, food left on a plate is at the end of the day thrown away.   Ask any homeless person and he or she will confirm this, as each night, the restaurants closed for the night, the homeless gather around the garbage bins for the left-overs.

Now however, you need not waste food because the Doggy Bag has arrived in Paris.

And what is more, you need not be ashamed to ask for what you had left on your plate to be put in a doggy bag for you to take off with you.   “For the doggie,” of course …

French governments having fought against the wasting of food for years already, the Macron government has finally decided to do something about it.

Accordingly, on March 21 this year (2018) MP Berangere Abba put forward a motion in Parliament for restaurants not to refuse when a diner has asked for what has been left on the plate to be put in a Doggy Bag.

In all honesty, I must point out that Parliament will only vote on this towards the end of this month (May 2018) but it will certainly become law.

Some restaurants, like Chinese and Japanese ones, have already for a couple of years been putting what clients have left on their plates in doggy bags.  They even offer doggy bags, not waiting to be asked for one. (I myself have often been offered a doggy bag of what I’ve left on my plate, and always have I accepted, despite that I do not have a doggie and the food came in handy as a TV snack later.)

Some restaurant owners are though a little upset should they be forced or shall we say be ‘obliged’ to offer doggy bags.  They point out that the box for the food will cost them 10/15 centimes each. (21/18 US cents – 9/13 UK pence)

Madame Abba is now faced with a new problem.

How to translate ‘doggy bag’?

Un sac a toutou?

Toutou being slang for a dog.

Rather clumsy that one, I think, so ‘doggy bag’ it will probably remain.

The Tour d’Argent is Paris’s most expensive and most gourmet restaurant.  Anyone who asks for a doggy bag in there will need guts!

I did not know that Marilyn. Very interesting. I would want to watch the food being put into the doggy bag to make sure that there were no ‘unwelcome additions’. 😀
