One thing we all have in common: not one of us has chosen our name.

Names are chosen for us before we have even been born. Unless of course for one reason or another we call ourselves by another name later in life: we are on the run from justice for example, or we do so for professional reason.

Once here in France, not a day would pass that I did not come across a Michel or a Michelle. And then there were all those men called Jean or Jean-Pierre or Jean-Marc or Jean-Louis etc etc. And all those women called Marie this and Marie that.

For the past ten years though the name Gabriel for a male child and Louise for a girl child have topped the name charts here in France.

This is not just me saying so but Insee (Institut National de la Statistique et des Études  Économiques – National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies).

In a book published here in France this week author Stéphanie Rapoport who for the past twenty years has studied Insee statistics, says that Gabriel and Louise will also be the most popular names in 2018.  Six thousand boys will be named Gabriel and 5000 girls will be named Louise.

The popularity charts look like this:

Boys:

Gabriel

Raphaël

Jules

Léo

Lucas

Adam

Louis

Liam

Ethan

Hugo

Girls:

 Louise

Emma

Jade

Chloé

Alice

Léa

Lina

Mila

Manon

Inès

To reflect the changes in France – religious etc –  the name Mohamed will be given to 2500 baby boys on birth next year.

Ms Rapoport’s book has been published by ‘First Editions’. Its title is L’Officiel des prénoms. The cover price is € 19.95
