Each year for the past twenty odd years France is the country most visited in the world, whereas Paris is the most visited city in the world.

Statistics for 2013 have not yet been issued, but plus/minus 84 million visitors come to France annually.

This Christmas/New Year season was no different. Believe me, you could not swing a cat in Notre Dame Cathedral or under the Eiffel Tower, and this I experienced myself as I stood between the tower’s iron legs on Christmas Eve.

Eiffel Tower ...what else?

Eiffel Tower …what else?

Well, I suppose that the 64,933,400 souls who live in France must have a reason why they do.

This is what the population of France was on January 1 this year (2014) according to L’Insee (National Institute of Statistics & Economic Studies.

Twelve million of the almost 65 million living in Paris and her region – just like yours very truly, Marilyn Z. Tomlins.

A breakdown of the statistics further show that France had gained 1.7 million inhabitants in five years.

Did I say gain?

Yes, I did indeed, but where is it going to stop? Getting a seat on the Mètro these days is like winning the national Loto: your chances are slim! And men no longer offer their seats to a woman, not even to a pregnant woman.

The town with the greatest population growth is named Villejuif – Town of the Jews, is what it means. Not that it is.

Villejuif is not a town as such, but a suburb of Paris. It is next door to where I live and you can take it from me that twenty years ago it was not a place where anyone wanted to live (including me). Its 10.71% population grown to 56,336 people is due to new apartment blocks having been constructed.

(There is another town with a higher population grown – 31.47% – and the town is Dunkerque, but this is only because another two towns now fall within its boundary, so it doesn’t really count.)

Another Paris suburb which has had a population increase is Saint-Denis.

Saint-Denis is north of Paris, between the capital and Roissy where our Charles de Gaulle airport is, and 108,907 people live there now. This is an increase of 10.08%. Saint-Denis is where you would not want to walk the streets after nightfall. More I will not say.

Among towns which have seen a drop in inhabitants are Toulouse, Pau, Le Havre, La Rochelle and the beautiful Avignon.

Just to mention Toulouse: 455,002 people live there now which is a drop of 5.36%.

The following does not figure in L’Insee’s statistics but I can tell you that the most expensive place to live in in France is undoubtedly Paris. It is also here where the most expensive properties, for buying or renting, are, and the most expensive arrondissement (district) for property is the 6th.

So, do you have you decided now whether to make that move to France? Hitler once did!!
