Bullets don’t kill people … they go right through them …

Not often does one hear the police express concern over what happens when they open fire.

Strange as it may sound, this is happening in France.

Tough French CRS cops.

Not often does one hear the police express concern over what happens when they open fire.

Strange as it may sound, this is happening in France.

Our police are saying that the bullets they are using in their Sig Sauer guns, manufactured by Sauer und Sohn from Germany, are too high-performance.

What they mean is that when they fire at someone, the bullet goes right through the body of that person into anyone behind him/her, and may not even halt there but could continue on its way into and through the bodies of several more.

Now, that’s a dream bullet many a gangster would say, but not so a French cop.

Therefore, 48 million bullets are currently being destroyed here, and they are being replaced with a more considerate bullet, one that will hit the target and remain there.

The new bullets are Speer Gold Dots made by Alliant Techsystems from the States and an affiliate of Beretta from France. The US police use Speer Gold Dots too.

France has 48 million of the bullets on order to equip our 250,000 police, gendarmes, customs officials and prison guards.

The cost comes to €5.8 million ($7.6 million / £4.8 million).

Those bullets being destroyed now (20 million of them) had cost France €2.2 million ($2.8 million / £1.8 million) in 2004. That year France had also replaced the Manurhin guns with the Sig Sauer, and that bill had come to €90 million ($117.6 million / £75.3 million).

That’s a lot of money to keep law and order.

And you know what? I think I would prefer a bullet going right through me rather than nestling somewhere in my body. I mean bad luck to the guy standing behind me …
