The Louvre in Paris

The Louvre in Paris

I always recommend buying a ticket to the Louvre in advance. Already having a ticket one can walk right in. Believe me, every day and all day long there are lines to get into that glass pyramid.

I certainly always buy my ticket in advance. In fact, I never visit a museum or an exhibition without already having a ticket.  I buy mine from Fnac and sometimes I print out the ticket, or I go to one of Fnac’s stores to pick it up.

However, now I wish to warn you that you ought to watch out when you buy a ticket to the Louvre online, or if a charming young lady approaches you outside the  glass pyramid and she offers you ‘her’ ticket because her grandmother has passed away and she has to go to the funeral, or if she tells you that she works for the Louvre and she’s selling tickets outside.

It will be a scam.

In fact, it is a scam.

The police here have just arrested a Chinese man resident in Paris’s 14th arrondissement (district) who has been running a Louvre ticket scam.

The police have become aware that there were some fake Louvre tickets circulating some months ago already as the museum’s control machines had begun to reject tickets. An entire group of tourists from China had even tried to enter with fake tickets.

Then, two weeks ago Custom officers at Brussels (Belgium) Airport found 4,000 fake Louvre tickets in a parcel which had arrived from China. They instantly alerted their French counterparts who were of course already aware that there were some fake tickets about.

On Monday, August 18, on full alert, a vigilant Louvre security man noticed three Chinese approaching tourists outside the Louvre and went to see what was going on. He found they were offering fake tickets to the tourists lining up outside the pyramid and immediately escorted them into the museum and quickly the police arrived. The three had a dozen fake tickets they were trying to sell. They were arrested and driven in a police vehicle to the nearest police station house where they quickly revealed the name of their supplier. This was the Chinese man resident in the 14th arrondissement who was then duly rounded up and charged and is under lock and key.

According to a Louvre employee no fake ticket has been detected since the beginning of this month (September) but as was pointed out, a ticket is valid for a year, so more of the fakes are sure to turn up.

One of the Louvre's treasures.

One of the Louvre’s treasures.

Do also be vigilant from who you buy a ticket online to the Louvre or any other Paris (or French) museum or chateau. Buy it online from the museum or chateau itself, or Fnac is also a genuine ticket seller.

If you turn up with a fake ticket you will not be reimbursed and you will not be allowed in.

The above skeleton is not to scare off the fake ticket sellers, but one of the Louvre’s treasures.
