CHEVALINE SLAUGHTER … AT LAST SOLVED … MAY-BE BUT MAY-BE NOT …

Where it happened

Since the 5 September 2012 shooting of the Iraqi-born Al-Hilli naturalised-British family near the town with the delightful name of Chevaline – it means horsemeat – here in France, we have not just once, but several times, learned that the French police are holding someone who could have been the one who had opened fire on, and shot to death, this holidaying family innocently out on a day’s drive.

Today – Wednesday, January 12 of this year of 2022, 10 years since the shooting, we have again learned that someone – a man – is being questioned about the shooting.

So revealed Line Bonnet-Mathis, the prosecutor of Annecy, the administrative capital of Eastern France of which Chevaline is one of its towns.

Prosecutor Bonnet-Mathis, as French law requires, did not name the man. He would be named only should he be charged with the murder of the victims. Currently he is only being questioned about his whereabouts on that day 10 years ago, while his residence is also being searched.

I first wrote about the shooting, today mostly referred to by the French media as the ‘Chevaline Massacre’, just after it happened: and you can read it here –

I recommend that you do put your eye over it in order to refresh your memory of the shooting, or if you have not yet heard of it, to discovered it.

I had after having written the above piece updated on the case several times, and those updates you can also read here on this website.

Shot dead in Mr. Al-Hilli’s car were head of the Al-Hilli family – Saad – his wife, her mother, and a young Frenchman apparently innocently out for a cycle ride whose body was lying on the road beside his cycle. The Al-Hillis were the parents of two young girls. The eldest was brutally attacked by the shooter but survived; the youngest, having been hidden from the assailant under her mother’s frock, was unhurt.

One cannot help asking whether Prosecutor Bonnet-Mathis had not known for some time that she had a suspect, but had kept the news from the media in order for a bigger news splash.

There is of course much speculation about who this suspect is, and many names are circulating unofficially. These range from British politicians to Iraqi hired assassins, to discarded lovers, jealous spouses, and even to disgruntled family members.

What do I think?

Well, as men having been held for questioning before on this case – one had even committed suicide so had his interrogation upset him (apparently) – I think this will not be the last time we will hear of someone being held as a suspect. We will yet again hear of someone being questioned about the shooting, and then that person being released.

In other words, I think that this case is nowhere near to being solved.

UPDATE – 17.45 13/01/2022

The man the French police held has been released.

He was not the shooter.

His lawyer told journalists that he is relieved.
