KILLER DOCTOR. TRUE CRIME. TRUE HORROR.
Marilyn Z. Tomlins’, ‘Die in Paris’, the story of France’s most prolific serial killer – Dr Marcel Petiot – was an Xmas present from somebody who knows I like page-turning thrillers.
The choice was not a mistake for he too had read and really enjoyed this true-crime book.
Tomlins’ narrative style makes for such compulsive reading that I missed metro stops and lost sleep. She starts with a graphic description of the execution day. Although we know the end we want all the more to know the path that took this mad, money-crazed killer to the guillotine: the book is a terrific ‘must read’.
Her research is impressive and we get to see translated contemporary newspaper clippings and illustrations.
Dr Petiot murdered in Paris during the terrible years of WW2 when France was occupied by Hitler’s Nazi Germany, and French collaborators.
Petiot killed to make money . The son of two poorly paid postal workers; he was abandoned to the care of an aged relative when only four when his parents accepted promotion away from their home town of Auxerrre.
The little Marcel was not wanted and soon started stealing things his parents, or his foster parent, could not afford to buy him. At school he stole letters from mail boxes, possibly looking for scandalous information with which he could blackmail the recipients for money. But he also killed the family cat!
He was a highly-intelligent scholar, and become a successful medical doctor, although no authenticated documents prove his original qualification. Perhaps his medical diploma was part of the web of untruths he wove in his life?
Author Tomlins almost takes us by the hand as she leads us through Dr Petiot’s life and to his death on the guillotine for the murder of 26 innocents. Many of them were Jews who wanted to flee Occupied France, but finally paid this evil killer dearly in cash and with their lives. Others were gangsters who wanted to flee Occupied France. One victim was a seven-year-old Jewish boy.
This man killed; not for sexual gratification, as is often the case with serial killers, not because he was a Gestapo agent, something he claimed during his trial, adding that his victims were Germans and their French Collaborators – in other words French Nazis. He killed for self enrichment. On his death he was the owner of several Paris apartments, even entire apartment buildings.
‘Die in Paris’ is an accurate narration of Dr Petiot’s life. It reads like a thriller. The horror of the man’s existence shocked me but I learnt a lot: not least that not all that goes on in fine French town houses is necessarily what you’d want the neighbours to know!
