Die in Paris by author Marilyn Z Tomlins

Review by: Louise McDermott, Publishing Manager, Lingua Franca Publishers

Dr Marcel Petiot as a young family doctor.

To read this book is a must for all true-crime readers. I highly recommend this true-crime.

Why would I be so bold as to make this statement?

In my position as publishing manager I read many books from various authors and this review sums up the reasons for reading this true-crime.

Firstly, the author skillfully takes the reader through the life, from childhood to adulthood, of the notorious serial killer, Marcel Petiot. The author maintains a professional writing style by never condoning, judging or philosophizing about the actions of this serial killer. Marilyn Z Tomlins allows you, the reader, to speculate and think about the actions and life of Petiot and that makes any excellent true-crime a very masterful read. However, even if the author allows for own speculation she maintains a carefully research based, factual, interesting, account of what happened.

Secondly, as you continue to read, Die in Paris, you become aware of the tremendous amount of factual research that went into writing this book. This book is proof of that tremendous amount of research.

Thirdly, as from the first chapter the suspense grabs you. It compels you to read on as you want to know what happened on this silent street in war-time Paris.

It was on this street and on this spot that Petiot murdered.

It was on this street and on this spot that Petiot murdered.

You need to know what the origin of the smoke is. You need to know where the horrific smell that fills the streets and houses in the surrounding area comes from. So you read on and on. The more you read the more you want to read.

Fourthly, you as the reader become acutely aware of the double life of this killer. It is so well-written that you as a frequent crime reader can in your mind, compare the actions of this killer to others you may have read about. It was easy for me to compare this calm, extremely nice family man and doctor to other vicious killers I have read about. It is horrifying to read how he took his family to the theater while in a small triangular room, in a dark basement, a victim lay dead.

Finally, read, Die in Paris. It is reading time well spent.
