They said it could not happen; one could not jump from the Eiffel Tower anymore to kill oneself.

They were wrong.

A Brazilian tourist – a young girl aged 18 – just did.

And she smashed to her death on to the glass roof of the packed 1st-floor restaurant down below.

“It was a shocking moment,” one of the waiters recalled.

The roof cracked.

But it’s expensive eating in the newly renovated restaurant so the customers … well, they just continued eating.

Why did the girl want to end her life?

The Paris police are saying that they do not know, but that her 25-year-old brother had desperately tried to hold her back.

“He was really holding on with all his power, but she pulled free, and down she went,” said a young Italian girl who watched from a few feet away.

Did any of the other tourists try to help him?

“Not that I know of,” said the Italian girl. “We were like … is this a lover’s argument … and then before we could decide … over she went.”

Both the Eiffel Tower and the look-out platforms on Notre Dame Cathedral have been fitted with netting to make jumping impossible.

Yet, apparently, if one’s determined to die, the netting won’t stop you.

About 20 years ago, on a Sunday afternoon in August, a young Canadian girl on holiday in Paris with her sister jumped from the highest of the cathedral’s platforms and landed on another tourist, also a young girl, taking pictures down below.

Both girls were killed.

Not really the tower's fault is it? But what a tragedy. Especially the one where the jumper killed another girl. The San Francisco bridge has the same problem – however some people survive and there is a Survivors Club.

I can think of less messy ways to top oneself.
