What is the most popular girl’s name in France?

For the past seven years it has been this name.

It starts with an E.

Can’t guess?

It’s Emma.

Tomorrow, Thursday, September 15, the yearly name manual – L’Officiel des Prénoms will be published here. It will cost you €17.90 ($24 – £15) but it contains 12,000 names – male and female.

The most popular boy’s name is Nathan.

(I know neither an Emma nor a Nathan.)

Here are the top 20 for each gender.

Male:

Nathan, Lucas, Jules, Enzo, Gabriel, Louis, Arthur, Raphaël, Mathis, Ethan, Noah, Hugo, Léo, Timéo, Tom, Adam, Théo, Mathéo, Yanis and Maël.

Female:

Emma, Jade, Zoé, Chloé, Léa, Manon, Inès, Maëlys, Louise, Lilou, Camille, Lola, Sarah, Eva, Clara, Lina, Léna, Louna, Romane and Anaïs.

In the first part of the 20th century the name Marie was the most popular for a girl, and Jean for a boy.

I know that Marilyn had also become popular too a few years ago. That is its French versions of Marylene and Marilene.
