My novel – For the Love of a Poet

I am sure that with every profession there are days when one has thoughts of not continuing.

Perhaps this happens more often to writers because writing is a lone and lonely thing to do.

Today I have had a wonderful review for my newest novel – For the Love of a Poet. The kind of review that makes writing worthwhile. That makes one want to continue writing – to write another book.

I’ve written four. (I will add a photo of the front cover of the other three down below.)

I have ideas for three fictions and two biographies up in my head.

The biographies will need research. For one of the biographies most of the research will have to be in German and I have a German friend who has already been doing research for me, in Germany and in German.  He has now recruited more Germans all eager to help me, and indeed urging me to write the book.

As for the three fictions, one idea has been given to me by an Australian friend. He thinks that this is the book I should write next.

And you know, here I am, asking myself some days whether it is all worth it. Whether I should not go sit on a beach in Greece, for example, and spend my days reading what others have written.

But here today a reader has given my For the Love of a Poet a wonderful review, and now I think, that no, a beach on Greece, is not for me. I must keep on bashing this keyboard.

This reader writes on Amazon.uk, and this is the beginning of his review, so do go here and read the rest:

He writes:

Marilyn Tomlins really does go from strength to strength. I’ve read both her Bella and Die In Paris but I think this surpasses even those.

I agree with other reviewers: this is certainly so much more than simply a rather exotically-situated love story. It’s the story of post-revolution Russia itself. The impossible love between Tanya and her worshipped poet is the pivot around which a much bigger narrative is told: idealistically-inspired revolution going horribly, cruelly wrong under a brutal dictator.

Quite rightly, the author doesn’t gloss over or sanitise the terrible conditions – in every way – that the Russian people endured in the 1930s (and the Western world thought its Depression was bad enough . . .) This is meaty, gripping reading, so if what you seek is light, frothy undemanding romance, look elsewhere.

I found it a tremendously satisfying, totally absorbing read; a real page-turner. I liked the use of the first person, present tense voice, which leant great immediacy. I felt I was right there with Tanya, caring about her. And although their relationship was technically illicit, I felt total sympathy with the protagonists.

It’s many years since I read it, but this book put me in mind of Dr Zhivago. It portrays the same turbulent sweep of history, one which would have such super-power repercussions in the later 20th century and almost bring the world to Armageddon.

Dr Zhivago!

My heart is singing.
