On Thursday, November 12, in other words the day before the terrorist attacks in Paris, I spent two hours in the company of France’s gendarmes. No, I was not under arrest, and neither was it a case of me helping the police with their enquiries, as is said in ‘policespeak’, but I visited the new Gendarmerie Museum in the town of Melun, 45 kms (28 miles) south of Paris.

So starts a piece I wrote about France’s new Gendarmerie Museum – the Musée de la Gendarmerie Nationale for the two websites – English Informer in France, and English Informer in the UK.

In the piece I also write about the history of France’s gendarmes, and about its different companies.

Your Comments
Very interesting and the photos give a person an even better insight into the history of the development of the French gendarmes.

A good article.
