Today – July 30 – in the year 1890 – it was a Wednesday – Vincent van Gogh was buried in the village where he had died – Auvers-sur-Oise.

He had died the day before – Monday, Tuesday, July 29, from a gunshot wound.

About his death I will say no more.

However, soon I will. Therefore, if you are interested in Vincent van Gogh, note this website to come back to it.

Since 1914 Vincent has been sharing the grave with his brother Theo.   Theo had died on Sunday, January 25, of the year 1891. He had died of dementia paralytica caused by syphilis.   Buried in Utrecht, Netherlands, close to the town of Zundert where the Van Gogh brothers were born, his remains were exhumed and reburied beside Vincent’s in Auvers-sur-Oise.  This was in 1914 when Theo’s widow had remarried.

I visit the grave every year.  I’ve just returned from another visit to it.

I took the above photo of the grave in the summer of 2016. Since then the headstones have been replaced and today, 128 years after Vincent’s death, they are beautifully white. The replacement of the headstones is part of a 1.5 million euro renovation project the Auvers-sur-Oise town authority has for the cemetery and the Auvers-sur-Oise church made famous because of a Vincent van Gogh painting.

So today, it is some 128 years since Vincent’s earthly remains were laid in the Auvers-sur-Oise cemetery.

Yet, he continues to live because of his paintings. And in his paintings.

He is my favourite painter, and I not only like his art, but so too the person he was.

So good to see the photos of the graves and of the church. His talent really shows if one holds his interpretive painting of the church next to the photo of how it looks in reality.
