Maroilles Cheese (cc MarilynZ. Tomlins)

Undoubtedly, you have heard of – eaten – France’s camembert cheese. And France’s Roquefort cheese.

However, what about France’s Maroilles cheese?

No!

Then you are missing a real treat, because take it from me, Maroilles is France’s nicest cheese: not only France’s nicest cheese, but the nicest cheese in all the World.

The cheese was first made around 962 by a monk in the Abbey of Maroilles: the abbey dating from 650.

The monk’s name has not been recorded, but so were the names of three French monarchs who ate the cheese by the bucket-full. They were Philip 11, king from 1180/1223; Louis IX known as Saint Louis, king from 1226/1270; Charles V1, king from 1380/1422, and Francis 1, king from 1515/1547.

The town of Maroilles, pronounced mar whal, is in France’s ‘Nord’ département (region) close to the Belgian border.

According to a 2015 census 1398 people live in the town – and they are still making Maroilles cheese. In fact, only cheese made in Maroilles can be classified by that name.

I will end by saying that you must absolutely buy some Maroilles cheese.

As it is rather ‘gourmet’, you might have to look around for it, but the search will be well worthwhile.

If you live in the United Kingdom and you should be planning to take a ferry to the North of France, perhaps to visit beautiful Lille, then you will certainly find Maroilles cheese in the Lille supermarkets.
