French, it is said, is the most beautiful language in the world. It is also (as is also being said) not the hardest language to learn (go and tell that to the Marines!) Apparently Chinese is, or Russian: if you are an optimist you learn Russian; if you are a pessimist you learn Chinese. I am an optimist and have a few Russian lessons behind my back so I can at least read the street signs in Moscow and St Petersburg.

Anyway, occasionally now I will give you a French word you ought to learn — don’t worry, they will all be decent, quite decent.

The first is ardiskoont. What can it possibly mean? You’ve guessed perhaps? It is franglais for ‘hard discount’. You can see the word under Euro on the above picture. (Rather small, I’m afraid.)

So, on your next visit to
France, after you’ve unpacked your wheelie, ask the ‘concierge’ to direct you to the nearest ardiskoont, non?
