Frédéric Mitterrand is the name. He is France’s Minister of Culture. He is also the nephew of a former president of France, the late François Mitterrand. François Mitterrand was a socialist. Frédéric Mitterrand, a former tv presenter, is so as well, yet he accepted the post of Minister of Culture in Nicolas Sarkozy’s right-wing government.

To say the least Frédéric Mitterrand is a controversial figure. He is homosexual, but this is not what I am referring to. I am referring to his 2005 autobiography La Mauvaise Vie – The Bad Life – and what he wrote in it.

In the book Frédéric Mitterrand wrote in some detail, and probably frankly, about his homosexuality. He also wrote about his penchant for ‘young boys’ and for paying for sex with young boys while traveling abroad. Abroad like in … Thailand.

He wrote: “I got into the habit of paying for boys.”

He also wrote of his attraction for young male prostitutes despite knowing “the sordid details” of the sex trade. “All these rituals of the market for youths, the slave market excited me enormously … the abundance of very attractive and immediately available young boys put me in a state of desire.”

The book was a best-seller here and one had to be a moron not to have read or heard about it, and to have discussed it, but there was not a word about it when President Sarkozy made Frédéric Mitterrand our Minister of Culture this summer.

But, it was for Marine le Pen, who is the daughter of the extreme-right National Front Party leader, Jean-Marie le Pen, and herself a politician and member of the European Parliament, to tell, or remind the morons about it. She did so this week on a tv debate when she read out what he had written and described him as “an indelible stain on the government”. She called for his resignation, or better still, for his dismissal.

Within 48 hours the spokesman for the opposition Socialist Party, Benoît Hamon, aired the party’s voice too. He said: “As a minister of culture he has drawn attention to himself by defending a film maker accused of raping a child and he has written a book where he said he took advantage of sexual tourism. To say the least, I find it shocking.” Asked by a tv news anchor whether Frédéric Mitterrand should be dismissed, he replied that it was for President Sarkozy to decide whether France’s policy of fighting sex tourism was compatible with keeping Frédéric Mitterrand as a minister.

Other politicians are also now calling for Frédéric Mitterrand’s dismissal. And believe me this is a story that has become front-page news here.

However, friends of Frédéric Mitterrand are speaking up in support of him. They are saying that here in France homosexuals speak of all men as boys – garcons – the word he had used in his autobiography. He had therefore not meant that boy children excited him sexually, they say.

As for Frédéric Mitterrand himself. Oh, he is saying that it is an “honor” to be “dragged through the mud” by the extreme right and that the Socialists should be “ashamed” of following suit. He said this when journalists and cameramen cornered him while he was rushing along a corridor to an elevator. Conveniently (for him) the elevator door closed before he could be questioned further.

It is now for President Sarkozy to decide whether to give France’s Minister of Culture the boot. Maybe someone should remind Monsieur Sarkozy that both he and his wife, Carla Sarkozy-Bruni, have an under-aged son.

(Frédéric Mitterrand was the first ‘personality’ here in France to speak up against the Swiss arrest of Roman Polanski. Speaking to journalists he attacked America by describing it as “frightening”.

There are times one must say oh la la. Now is such a time.

    Adding:

Monsieur Mitterrand has refused to resign.

He said on prime time tv news that he was not writing about sex with under-aged boys in his autobiography, but of sex with adult men.

He also said that he had never in his life paid under-aged boys for sex, only adult men.

He then also turned the tables on those of us who think that he has no business being France's Minister of Culture (or hold any official position),by calling us intolerant of homosexuality.

Monsieur Mitterrand, excuse me, but I am not intolerant of homosexuality. And another thing — the issue here is not homosexuality.

His autobiography sold 350,000 copies. This shows that smut sells.

I can't imagine anyone writing about his sexual preferences in such a way. If he went to Thailand, it wasn't young men it was boys, they are readily available. He should certainly be booted out.
