Paris Metro

You would have reached this website because you are a visitor to Paris and you will be using the métro to get about in and around the city.

First on your mind will be the question: Will it be safe?

Yes, it is, but for two lines:  4 and 12.

Not that I am now telling you not to take these two lines, but I am telling you is that you ought to be very much aware of who stands or sits beside you when on the platforms of these two lines. And, when you are on its trains.

Lines 4 and 12 are known as the ‘zombie lines’.

Why zombie?

Because it is on these two lines where crack dealers operate, and therefore where crack users, all of them in a dazed state, sit around.

To give you a statistic. From December 2016 to December 2017 the police have had to deal with the arrest of 283 sellers and 406 users of crack in the Paris métro. Most of these cases from those two stations.

Line 4 runs from Mairie de Montrouge in the south to Porte de Clignancourt in the north.

Line 12 runs from Mairie d’Issy in the south to Aubervilliers – Front Populaire in the north.

I must just say that the area around the Porte de Clignancourt is not very safe. This is partly because this is where Paris’s  flea market – Marche aux Puces de  Clignancourt – is situated and scores of street sellers stand about selling counterfeit, or stolen, luxury goods like watches, smart-phones, cameras and handbags, and cigarettes. Porte de  Clignancourt  is in Paris’s 18th arrondissement (district).  Migrants also gather in this area, putting up tents or cardboard shacks, so the area is not at all one to wander around in. I will even say that it is not an area where a woman should walk on her own: I won’t. The flea market itself is great for walking around in, but, I never go there without a man with me.
