UPDATE:

How Paris voted in the first round of the presidential election on Sunday, April 23, 2012:

Paris voted Left for a change.

This is how it went:

Of the capital’s 20 arrondissements 7 only voted for the incumbent – rightwinger Nicolas Sarkozy. These 7 arrondissements were:

1st; 6th; 7th; 8th; 15th; 16th and 17th.

In other words the arrondissements where the wealthy or fortunate or good earners live.

The arrondissement where Marine le Pen, canditate of the extreme right wing Front Nationale – National Front – received her highest score was the 13th.  This arrondissement is heavily populated by Chinese, Vietnamese and Cambodians who had fled here during the Vietnam war. It is also home to a large Jewish community.

President Sarkoky also won in the wealthy communes around Paris. These are: Antony, Bois-Colombes, Boulogne-Billancourt, Neuilly-sur-Seine, Rueil-Malmaison, Saint-Cloud and Suresnes. (He used to be Mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine for years.)

The most troublesome area in the Paris region – Seine-Saint-Denis – voted massively for the Socialist Party candidate Francois Hollande.  Extreme Left Wing (supported by Communists) candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon also did well in that area with 16.69% of the vote. (By troublesome I mean that this is the area where you do not walk around alone at night if you are a woman.)

Paris has 1,249,402 on her voters’ role. Of them 1,004,558 voted.  First was Francois Hollande with 345,627 votes. Then came Nicolas Sarkozy with 319,477 and then Melenchon with 110,101. Marine le Pen received 61,498 votes.

So, if you are planning to move to Paris, you now know where to go and live – or not to live.
