This is when the French say Oh la la!

Yesterday, the French parliament voted a new law which makes ‘buying the sexual act’ illegal!

Nice way of putting it, don’t you think?

The French have always had a very liberal view of prostitution. I mean the French capital has its Pigalle – or as the G.I.s called this district – Pig Alley – when they arrived in Paris in August 1944 to liberate France from the Nazi occupation.

But Paris had, and has, so much more in the line of ‘pay sex’ than Pig Alley.

There is Rue St-Denis in the 2nd arrondissement (district), and there is Avenue Foch in the very chic 16th arrondissement , and the Bois (Wood) de Boulogne and the Bois (Wood) de Vincennes and all along the Boulevard Périphérique (the ring road all along the capital’s  periphery).

The prostitutes are not all female: male prostitution is as big and lucrative a profession here in France as female prostitution. And the prostitutes of the Bois de Boulogne are even both all at once – transvestites – once all from Brazil, but these days from just about anywhere.

So what does the new law approved by 64  ‘for’ and ’12’ against and ’11’ abstentions, and which has been debated now for 2 and a half years, entail:

It is going to hit out at prostitution – end it, they hope – by making those they catch in the act pay a fine.

The amount of the fine will be €1500 – $1700 / £1212. ‘In the act’ means either during the act of intercourse, or while still handing the prostitute’s demanded fee over to her – or him.

That is the fine for a first offence: for a recidivist the fine will be €3500 – $3967 / £2828.

By the way, until now prostitution was not as such illegal, but pimping was. In other words, a third party living off a prostitute’s remuneration was illegal. This made brothels illegal.

The prostitute involved will no longer be charged. He or she may even be well treated. By this I mean the prostitute will be given ‘social assistance’ to end the prostitution, and those who are illegally in France will be granted temporary residence during which they are to apply for permanent residency. Many of France’s prostitutes are, in fact, from the former Communist Bloc, or Africa or China and are in the country illegally.

Prostitutes have already given interviews to various French media outlets to warn that this new law will force them to go off the streets and practice their profession in hiding which will endanger their lives should they be alone in a room with a pervert.

I must say that the majority of those of us who live in France – French or foreigner – prostitution is something we only read about …

I, for one, wrote a novel about love in France which will give you a good idea of how the French look on sex and love and marriage.

The title is: Bella – A French Life.

Morally-no one can argue. So-not a peep. But coming from everywhere else, my, there’s too much to say. I agree the cops may miss rushing to, for instance, save someone who’s in the process of being battered by a family member because they’re all on call (on the bright side-perhaps they’ll grow up and live a life of prostitution just to get away from familial violence and the police can make up for lost time)… I can see sexual diseases on the rise; how about the kids who yell child abuse when they don’t get their way-now they can say my dad and mom are pimps and ho’s. My mind isn’t thinking slow enough for me to be logical and clear here-but I know what I’m talking about-I was assistant to the owner of a legal brothel (among other things she owned) when I was a teen and young adult. Ha ha! I’m finished hijacking your comments. Thanks for sharing and I love that your book is based on love.

Very foolish and a waste of time for the police who have a better catch to go after. Good bye Irma la Douce.
