In my previous post I said that I hoped that Madame Chantal Sebire would go quietly in the night. It might not have been quite like that … but she has died.

The news broke last night (Wednesday, 20) at 9.30. The police say that they have not yet been able to establish the cause of death, but the daily ‘Figaro’ reported that her daughter of 12 had found her dead at 7.30pm.

I suppose that now the French state will insist on an autopsy and inquest. And charges might well be brought against ‘X’ for ‘having assisted’ her in ending her life.

Shame on France. I say ‘France’ and not ‘the French’ because there is an outcry here against those in authority who would not grant this poor woman her wish to be helped to die. The radio stations were flooded with calls first thing this morning by angry people demanding that the law that forbids euthanasia now be debated and amended. Ninety-nine percent of callers were in favor of euthanasia – assisted-suicide, if you wish.

Madame Sebire said that she wanted to have one more party, surrounded by her family and friends, and then, at dawn, she wanted to leave this world.

Madame Sebire, I hope wherever you are now, you are having that party!

Good for her, I hope she is having a party too and that X does not get prosecuted.
