On Monday 16 May – five days from the day I am writing these words – the first of three major sporting events which Paris will host this summer is to start. This is the French Tennis Open Championship: what we call here in France ‘Roland Garros’ because the court where the matches will be played is named Roland Garros.

The other two sporting events are (1) the Tour de France Cycling race’s final, and (2) the opening match and the final of the European Football Cup – the Euro2016.

The Parisians (me included) are not looking forward having tens of thousands of visitors pouring into our city to watch, or participate, in these three events.  That sounds nasty, does it not, but Paris is already noisy and crowded and polluted ….

I wrote about it on the two sites – ‘French Informer in France’ and ‘English Informer in the UK’.

I start my article as follows:

We who live here in Paris are bracing ourselves for the influx of visitors this summer because of sporting events. I will let you in on a secret: Parisians are not very fond of tourists. We say they are untidily dressed; sit on the pavements eating sandwiches or hamburgers and drinking anything from Coca Cola to beer and wine – and then leaving the empties and the wrappers on the ground. And we also say that because of them the queues in front of our museums and chateaux are long and we cannot therefore just make an impromptu visit to an exhibition but have to plan a visit and buy our tickets in advance.
